WELCOME TO PATTUSALI COMMUNITY
It is a Weaver community in southern states of India comes under ‘Sali’ community. Again this was subdivided into various sub casts in conformance with their procedures for getting lively hood.
In Andhra Pradesh, these people are being identified as ‘Sali’ cast. Sali is the Telugu word for spider. As spider weaves its dwelling and gets lively hood, the same name was assigned for this community.
There are various sub categories in Sali community which are being identified with their life styles and nature of work for earning their lively hood. Pattusali community stands at the top rung of the hierarchy with their finest caliber for weaving excellent silk raiment.
When we try to find the origin of Pattusali community its roots can be found in the history of Saurashtra region of Gujarat state and for this reason these are called ‘Saurashtra Brahmins’ in some areas at present.
Pattusali people wear cross belt woven from cotton strings as in the case of Brahmins. Some of them are strict vegetarians and some other used to be non vegetarians. Padmasalis will earn their livelihood by weaving coarse cloths from cotton and where as Pattusails are confined to weave only silk and other finer quality of yarn.
Pattusali community widely spread in South India while compared to northern parts. They live in a few districts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Odisha states. Pattusalis are being identified as Shaliyan in Tamil Nadu, Shaliga in Karnataka, and Chaaliyan in Kerala states.
Coming to Telugu states, Pattusali community lives at large numbers in North Andhra region and Dharmavaram in Rayalaseema which is famous for Dharmavaram silk saris. Famous Ponduru Khaddar (made with raw cotton threads in multiple colors) which is fondly worn by politicians is one of the proud products of Pattusali community in Srikakulam district, where this community plays predominant role in the social structure of the area.
Pattusali community members had shown their allegiance to Hinduism during the invasion of Christian Missionaries to British ruled India. Only a fraction of 0 .002 % of Pattusalis converted into Christianity as all other practiced in Hindu religion either worshipping Vishnu or Shiva.
Pattusali caste is declared as backward caste under BC- B Serial No.17, Category vide G.O.MS.No1793, Education Department on 23/09/1970 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh and preference is given for education, employment and in other fields.
AIM OR OBJECTIVE
We took great pain and came across several obstacles in gathering information about our Pattusali community to cater the needs of our own people while acting as a single force.
Actually speaking we are unable to know the exact number of people exist in Pattusali community in Andhra Pradesh, Telengana and other states of India.
We hope that while using this Website as an interface, all our members will join together and help one another in their capacity either in individual or in official.
We are planning for including various community activities such as matrimonial, assistance to higher education for financially backward students and other issues in this Website.
We request all patrons of Pattusali community members across the globe to spread this message by mouth publicity through this www.pattusali.in
